American Spectator: Thune for president

Category: Misc

By Denise Ross

Calling South Dakota’s own Sen. John Thune “a favorite son,” the American Spectator is asking John Thune to run for president.

Why? To save the GOP from John McCain.

Mainstream conservatives are being routed in this year’s presidential contests. And if John McCain or, less likely, Mike Huckabee goes into the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis with a first-ballot majority, the conservative movement will be completely shut out of a general election presidential campaign for the first time since 1976. For the movement that has brought peace, triumph and prosperity to this nation for 27 years, such an outcome would be a disaster — and, worse, it would be a disaster for the country.

The Spectator wants Thune and a few others it deems worthy to get on the ballot only in their home states. Thune would have until March 25 to file nominating petitions for SD’s June 3 primary. And then?

And then at convention, Thune and his compatriots would, um, take over the national Republican convention for the greater good.

Thompson could re-emerge as a compromise, consensus choice. Or Dick Cheney. Or Jeb Bush. Or SEC Chairman Chris Cox (also a perfect VP choice for just about anybody). Or one of the favorite sons themselves; I can think of far worse general-election scenarios than a Republican ticket led by Thune, Santorum, or Pence.

Dick Cheney??!!? Someone’s out of touch. Cheney might be able to get elected President of Wyoming.

Anyway, it’s widely accepted that one shouldn’t have to point out irony. So let me just offer this link.

The conservatives are what caused this country to go back 50 years. We do not need their failed policies. This country is ready for a change back to America Values and Leadership in the World.
